1998.

Patrick er framúrskarandi leikmaður sem kom frá A.C.

Before this season Bould
had scored five goals in his Arsenal career, having signed for a
bargain £390,000 in June 1988. He would have become a free
agent this summer but Arsene Wenger persuaded him to sign
another year's extension to his contract in February 1998. A
no-holds-barred kind of player who's not afraid to put his head in
where the boots are flying, as he proved in suffering a nasty head
wound in his Champions League debut against Kiev in November.
TONY ADAMS
Central Defender.
Born: Romford, 10/10/66.
Height: 6'3".
Weight: 13.11.
Signed from trainee.
Full international caps: England
The Gunners' captain and inspiration, Tony has been described as
"the rock on which the modern Arsenal side is founded". A hugely
imposing physical presence, allied to an intelligent reading of the
game, has seen him recognised as one of the outstanding defenders
of his generation. His daunting power in the air also makes him a
highly effective attacking option from set pieces. Tony captained
his country through the Euro '96 campaign, making light of his off
the field problems with alcohol addiction . Last season was another
successful one for Adams who was named in the P.F.A Premiership
team of the year. This term's been disrupted by injury but he
netted twice in three games in September, to book wins against
Manchester United and Panathinaikos.
NELSON VIVAS
Defender
Born: Argentina, 10/10/66
Previous club: Lugano
International Caps: Argentina
The experienced and versatile player was signed in August 1998
for £2 million. Vivas played an integral part in his country's
progression to the quarter-finals of France '98, and had been
tracked by clubs all over the world ever since. He netted his first
goal for the Gunners against Derby in the Worthington Cup third
round.
FREDERIK LJUNGBERG
Midfielder
Born: Sweden 16/4/77
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 11'10"
Previous club: Halmstads
International Caps: Sweden
After Ljungberg's much-lauded starring role in Sweden's European
Championship qualifier victory over England, Arsene Wenger stole
the march on his Premiership rivals by snapping up this nippy
attacking midfielder for £3m.
Partly required to help the Gunners cover the loss of the retired
David Platt, Ljungberg will be a substantial asset to the side, as he
could play on either flank or fill in up front.
He netted his first Gunners goal to cap the 3-0 win over
Manchester United in September at Highbury.
NICOLAS ANELKA
Striker.
Born: Versailles (France) 14/3/79.
Height: 6'0.
Weight: 12st
Previous club: Paris St Germain
International caps: French Under-21
A French Under-21 international, Anelka was signed for an
undisclosed sum from French club PSG.
Wenger was hoping to sign the player for free at the end of the
season but the French side were furious at the prospect of losing
such a talent to the Bosman ruling and were claiming the transfer
would be illegal - so Wenger stepped in and offered them a deal.
Recently reported as being homesick for France and bored with life
in London, Anelka has refuted that he wishes to leave for either
France or Spain and reaffirmed his commitment to Arsenal. Arsenal
need him, as he proved with a run of goals during the first quarter
of the season he got six in 11 games including the winner at home
to Everton and away at Coventry. English Arsenal fans had mixed
feelings about his two goals which saw France beat England away
for the first time, in February '99. But he scored his first hat-trick
for the club against Leicester City on February 20th 1999.
DENNIS BERGKAMP
Striker.
Born: Amsterdam (Netherlands)18/5/69.
Height: 6'0".
Weight: 12'5".
Previous clubs: Ajax, Internationale.
Full international caps: 48 (Holland).
The Gunners' record signing, Bergkamp joined for £7.5m in July
1995. Having scored 103 goals in 185 matches for Ajax, he earned
a £12m move to Inter in July 1993 and bagged 11 in 52 matches for
the Italian side. The Dutch maestro has proved to be the most
skillful Arsenal player since Liam Brady, with sublime touch and
exquisite shooting ability bringing him 16 goals in his first season
at Highbury.
Won successive Player of the Month awards, the top three goals in
BBC Goal of the Month and a three match ban for five yellow cards
- all this before Christmas 1997. Won PFA Player of the Year, as
well as ranking third in FIFA World Player of the Year.
Bergkamp returned from injuries and suspensions to help guide
the Gunners to the Double, despite missing out on the run-in and
the FA Cup Final with a hamstring complaint, which affected both
his World Cup escapade with Holland and this season's early form.
MARC OVERMARS
Winger.
Born: Epe, Holland, 29/3/71
Height: 5'8".
Weight: 11'5".
Previous clubs: Go Ahead Eagles, Willem II,
Ajax Amsterdam
International caps: 33 (Holland)
Dynamic winger who arrived at Highbury in June 1997 in a £7
million deal.
Overmars first came to English attentions in April 1993 when he
outpaced Des Walker, who was forced to foul him for the penalty
that gave the Dutch a late equaliser in a vital World Cup qualifier at
Wembley.
He has now made a massive impact at Highbury, helping the
Gunners to the 1998 Double. His four goals in four games,
including a special in the clincher against Everton, rounded off his
season in style. Marc was a Christmas cracker for the Gunners in
1998, a goal at home to West Ham and a penalty at Charlton
earning two successive 1-0 wins on Boxing Day and December 28.
CHRISTOPHER WREH
Striker
Born: Monrovia, Liberia, 14/5/75
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 11'5"
Previous clubs: Guincamp (loan), Monaco, AEK
Athens (loan)
International caps: Liberia
A cousin of George Weah, Wreh signed for around £300,000 in the
summer of 1997.
It took him just seven minutes of his debut - for the reserves
against Charlton - to get on the scoresheet.
Made his debut from the bench in a Coca-Cola Cup tie against
Birmingham and then came on as a substitute against Manchester
United at Highbury. With Ian Wright injured, Wreh started to get a
regular first team place in March 1998 and repaid Arsene
Wenger's trust with some vital goals. His only goal in the first half
of the 1998-99 season came in the Charity Shield victory against
Manchester United. Is currently on loan with AEK Athens in
Greece.
ALEX MANNINGER
Goalkeeper
Born: Saltzburg, Austria, 4/6/77
Height: 6'2"
Weight: N/A
Goalkeeper
Previous clubs: Vorwarts Steyr, Casino Salzburg,
Casino Graz
International caps: Austria under-21
Manninger signed for £500,000 during the summer. He is a
qualified mechanic, and is the first Austrian keeper to play in the
Premiership. Replaced Seaman when the England ace suffered a
broken finger, and could hardly be blamed alone for the goals he
conceded in a poor run of form by the Gunners. Some stunning
performances in Arsenal's assault on League and FA Cup in 1998
included being the penalty shoot-out hero in the Coca-Cola Cup
quarter-final replay at West Ham.
MARTIN KEOWN
Central defender.
Born: Oxford, 24/7/66.
Height: 6'1".
Weight:12'4".
Previous clubs: Brighton and Hove Albion
(loan), Aston Villa, Everton.
Full international caps: 15 (England).
Keown is one of the best man-markers in the business although he
has also been employed as a full back and as a deep-lying midfield
player . He started his career with the Gunners as an apprentice in
February 1984 before moving on to Aston Villa for £200,000 in
1986. After a spell at Everton he returned to Highbury in February
1993 for a 2m fee. Keown has recently forced his way back into the
international set up. In the 1996-97 season he was very much a
fixture in the Arsenal side, missing only five league games. He is a
talent in both areas, as he showed with the only goal to beat
Nottingham Forest away in January '99.
RAY PARLOUR
Midfielder.
Born: Romford, 7/3/73.
Height: 5'10".
Weight: 11'12".
Signed from trainee.
International caps: England Under-21.
A ball-winning midfielder, Parlour came through the ranks at
Highbury and, having made an immediate impression by scoring on
his debut against Sheffield Wednesday in August 1992, was then a
key part of the side in the 1994/95 campaign. A spate of injuries in
recent times have thwarted his first team opportunities, but his
energy and industry make him a player that Arsene Wenger cannot
ignore.
He played 30 times in the Premiership during the 96/97 campaign,
but there were doubts about his long-term future at Highbury with
the influx of more foreign stars in the summer of 97.
ParlourÕs response was quite simple, he started playing the best
football of his career.
STEPHEN HUGHES
Midfield.
Born: Wokingham, 18/9/76
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 12' 8"
From Trainee
International caps: England Under-21s.
Hughes made a big impact in the 96/97 season, and is firmly
recognised as one of the best young players in the game.
He has come to the fore under the managership of Arsene Wenger,
and has scored some important goals.
His goals ratio is excellent - even better than Ian Wright's in fact.
He signed a new five-year deal at Highbury in February 1998.
Stephen bagged a last minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Leicester
in September 1998.
EMMANUEL PETIT
Midfielder.
Born: Dieppe, France, 22/9/70.
Height: 6'1".
Weight: 12'6".
Previous club: AS Monaco.
International caps: 15 (France).
Arsene Wenger beat North London rivals Tottenham to the
signature of the versatile Frenchman in the 1997 close season,
paying £3 million.
Petit, as a key figure in Aime Jacquet's French World Cup-winning
squad, scored his country's third goal in the 3-0 win over Brazil in
the World Cup Final, aided by France and Arsenal team-mate
Patrick Vieira.
Petit is an awesome midfielder, in partnership with Vieira and can
also feature in the Gunners' defence when necessary.
Petit actually made his debut at AS Monaco as an 18-year-old when
Wenger was in his second year of an eight-year stint in charge in
the principality.
This season he has again been in excellent form, and his two goals
in the FA Cup third round tie at Preston in January 1999 helped
turn the game around after the Gunners had been 2-0 down.
GILLES GRIMANDI
Defender.
Born: Gap,France 11/1/70.
Height: 5'11".
Weight: 11'11".
Previous club: AS Monaco
Like Petit, Grimandi was another of Wenger's proteges at AS
Monaco.
He was eager to join his former boss in the 1997 close season
despite the chance of Champions' League football in the
prinicpality.
Grimandi is a composed centre half, who reads the game superbly
and can pass with accuracy over distance.
Scored his only Gunners goal to date in securing the 1-0 over
Crystal Palace at Highbury last season.
REMI GARDE
Defender.
Born: 3/4/66, L'Arbesle, France.
Height: 6'0".
Weight: 13'1"
Previous club: Lyon, Strasbourg
Full international caps: 3 (France).
A former French international, Garde arrived on a free transfer on
the eve of the 96/97 campaign. He is equally comfortable in
midfield or in defence. The French international previously
partnered Chelsea's Frank Leboeuf in the Strasbourg defence.
Has played a major, if unforeseen role for the Gunners this season
in the Champions' League.
MATTHEW UPSON
Centre back
Born: Hartismere, 18/4/79
Height: 6'1".
Weight: 11'4".
Previous clubs: Luton Town
International caps: England Youth.
A regular in the Hatters youth team during his early days at
Kenilworth Road, making only one senior appearance team in
November 1995 in the Anglo-Italian Cup against Cesena.
With five members of the Arsenal rearguard over 30, Wenger
realised long-term replacements were needed and the England
under-18 international was thus signed for an initial £1.2 million. It
is possible the Gunners will eventually had to cough up £2 million if
Upson proves to be a sucess.
So far he's been restricted to occasional appearances due to
ever-impressive performances of Adams, Keown and Bould.
LUIS BOA MORTE
Midfielder.
Born: Lisbon, 4/8/78
Height: 5' 8"
Weight: 11' 3"
Previous club: Sporting Lisbon
International Caps: Portugal under-21
The young winger is a complete unknown quantity to the English
football media although reports suggest that he has bags of skill
and is very fast. Arsene Wenger paid £1.75 million for the player
with the future in mind, and he is versatile enough to play as a
striker or on the wing.
Boa Morte came into his own with two goals against Birmingham
City in the Coca-Cola Cup, last season, helping the Gunners to a
4-1 win.
Only an occasional selection for the Gunners, though he did play
against Kiev in the Champions League. Luis bagged the Gunners'
first goal as they came back from 2-0 down to win at Preston in the
FA Cup in January '99.
DAVID GRONDIN
Defender
Born: France, 8/5/80
Previous club: St Etienne
Arsenal caused a major surprise in the summer of 1998 by tying up
a five-year deal with St Etienne, with Grondin the first of the
players to be brought over from France.
The Gunners paid £500,000 for the teenager, who was regarded as
one of the top young players in France and scored in the Youth Cup
Final for his club last season.
The left-sided player, who becomes the sixth Frenchman on the
books at Highbury, is seen as the long-term relacement for Nigel
Winterburn.
He made his Gunners debut in the Worthington Cup against Derby
in October 1997.
ALBERTO MENDEZ
Midfielder.
Born: Nurnberg Germany, 24/10/74
Height:
Weight:
Previous clubs: FC Feucht, AEK Athens
(loan)
Arrived from German lower division side FC Feucht in the 1997
close season after a successful trial with the Gunners.
Mendez, who is qualified to play for Spain through his parents, was
virtually an unknown quantity even in Germany. However, at
£250,000 he represents a clear bargain. He scored on his Gunners
debut, in the Coca-Cola Cup against Birmingham in October 1997,
and has made most of his appearances in that competition. On
target for the Gunners in the 3-1 win at Panathinaikos in the final
Champions League game of '98-99, he was sent out on loan in
January '99 to AEK Athens for the rest of the season.
JOHN LUKIC
Goalkeeper
Born: Chesterfield 11/12/60
Height: 6'4".
Weight: 13'12".
Previous clubs: Leeds United (twice)
International caps: 1 (England B), 7 (England
Under-21), England Youth.
Lukic's extraordinary career has seen him take in two spells at
Elland Road and at Highbury. He first signed for the Gunners in
1983 for £50,000 and went on to make over 200 league
appearances and collect a championship winner's medal in 1989.
A year later Lukic had returned to Leeds United for £1m, and by
the end of the 1991/92 season he had been part of his second
league title winning team.
After being released in the 1996 close season Lukic, once again,
linked up with the Gunners. In the absence through injury of David
Seaman, Lukic was again a reliable keeper and featured in 15
Premiership games.
NWANKWO KANU
Attacking midfielder.
Born: Owerri, Nigeria. 1/8/76.
Height: 6'4".
Weight: 12'6".
Previous clubs: Ajax Amsterdam, Inter Milan.
Full international caps: Nigeria: 11
appearances, 2 goals
Kanu was a member of the Ajax side which won the coveted UEFA
Champions' League in 1995 and, in the following year's Olympic
Games, he helped Nigeria to win the gold medal.
Kanu was awarded the prestigious accolade of 1996 African Player
of the Year before his roll-call of club, national and individual
honours was shattered by the detection of a serious heart defect,
which necessitated surgery.
After two years of corrective operations, in which Kanu both played
no football, he was superseded at Inter Milan by Ivan Zamorano,
Roberto Baggio and Ronaldo.
Arsenal first attempted to sign Kanu in November 1998 and, after a
series of hurdles had been overcome, he signed for the club on
January 15th, for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £4.5m.
As well as the Champions' League and Olympic successes, Kanu
has won a trio of Dutch national championships, including two
league and cup doubles.
FABIAN CABALLERO
Striker
Born: Argentina, 31/1/78
Height: N/A
Weight: N/A
Previous club: Serro Portino (Paraguay)
Signed on a loan deal for the rest of the 1998-99 season, Caballero
will be keen to make a favourable impression on Arsene Wenger.
He is eligible to play international football for either Spain or
Argentina, but has so far not been called up.
He made his debut as a substitute in the 1-1 draw at home to
Middlesbrough.
KABA DIAWARA
Striker
Born: France, 16/12/75
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 12'6"
Previous club: Toulon, Bordeaux
After having scored five goals in seven appearances for Bordeaux,
at the start of the 1998/99 season, Diawara joined Arsenal on
January 29th 1999, in a deal worth around £3m.
The striker, who has played six times for the French under-21 side,
made his Gunners debut just two days later, as a substitute in the
1-0 victory over Chelsea at Highbury.
